Why I am writing a blog

Long story short, my dad.

I know, classic response. I actually am here because I really want to write a book about us. My Dad grew up with a wildly different life than I did and vastly different expectations of the outcome. Namely, he didn’t anticipate making it to 30 years old.

The hurdle I’m facing (that I’m hoping a blog can help me out with) is my writing skills and style. I haven’t written anything besides emails and morning pages for about a decade. I’ve never felt like a strong writer, my SAT scores certainly reinforced that thought and then I ended up a business + psych major. Outside of research papers and case studies, my experience is quite limited.

My hope is to dedicate some serious time to writing, covering topics I already know, to find my sound, work on how to tell a story and consistently write while I convince my Dad to help me narrate his entire life.

I see this thread that’s wound it’s way through his life into mine, I am fascinated watching our very similar personalities respond to the world and experiences and I want to dive deeper. My Dad often jokes that I broke the white trash chain in our family, but he doesn’t even consider the heavy lifting he did to give me the life I’ve had so far. I want to dig in to our family experience, give some context to generational traumas and our ability to thrive in the lives we’ve ultimately created.

If you’re reading this, thank you, thank you for playing a part in what I hope will one day be a much bigger, more in-depth story.
